In 1991 the former textile manufacturing village of Montolieu began a transformation which has made it a mecca for book lovers and graphic artists: about 15 book shops and artisans set up in the village, the Graphic Arts Conservatory was created, the Brousses Paper Mill was reopened and some regular events were initiated, such as : Le Printemps du Livre, Lire en Fête, Cuvée Spéciale…
Montolieu today is a place where you can find:
• 14 shops selling rare, antiquarian and second-hand books,
• 7 book and graphic art artisans,
• a museum of Printing and Graphic Arts,
• art and graphic design exhibitions,
• a rare book and manuscript collection,
• educational activities on the theme of the « Route du Livre »,
• a Contemporary Art and Literature Centre.
Montolieu gives bibliophiles, art lovers and leisure visitors to the village will a fascinating overview of the scope and diversity of old and second hand books as well as providing unique insight into the ancillary crafts and skills of bookmaking.
